Piazza Garibaldi Monterosso

The project for Piazza Garibaldi aims to restore the unity of the space that was lost through successive saturation interventions over time.

To strengthen and establish the central void, several specimens of stone pine are added along the alignment of the historic axis.
At the base of this row of trees, a functional band is structured, characterized by robinia wood paving, composed of a system of wooden seating positioned along the extension of the overpass pillars to maintain maximum permeability of the square toward the sea.

The treatment of the paving makes the space unified and contributes to reconnecting the square with the seafront through the railway portico. Bands of black and white bichrome stone inspired by the iconic facade of the Church of San Giovanni Battista are generated from the railway pillars.

This creates visual cones through the arches that allow the portico to be experienced no longer as a boundary but as a filter between the two areas.

The rediscovered central space allows for great flexibility of use: a place for daily gathering and rest for the inhabitants of Monterosso or for visitors, a place capable of hosting civic events and celebrations or the weekly market. Furthermore, the tensioned cable system allows for the installation of water misters that operate during the warmer season to cool the rest and seating areas.

The portico becomes a multifunctional element, uniting the two areas and generating the geometries of the space.

The barrier effect is reduced and, from a division, the portico transforms into a unifying element. Continuity at ground level is ensured by using the same paving in the square and on the seafront. A cladding in wooden slats with integrated lighting transforms the arches into pleasant environments for resting and passage.
